Hi! I'm Connie Suarez-Nistal the Author of SHATTERED SOUL.
Let me start by introducing the Characters...
This is Mitchell Stephen Buchanan, but everybody calls him Mitch.
This is when he was a Marine, he reached the rank of Major.
And here he is, as an FBI agent.
Both FBI Agents: Mitch Buchanan and his mate, Adam Sheppard.
Dr. Gordon, the Medical Examiner (Forensics) and Agent Sheppard's wife.
And the young Lab Technician... Cindy Booker... who has a crush on Buchanan.
Buchanan having one of those recurring nightmares of his...
Meet his wife... Carrie.
When they meet in the park, while feeding the pigeons... Mitch's happiest moment.
Then he discovers that she is blind... But she simply laughs, completely untroubled.
“It’s alright... I’ve lived with it all my life. I was born blind.”
She’s fun, lovable, and always cheerful... He simply can’t help falling in love with her.
Here, she gently touches his face, tracing his features with her fingertips, as though memorizing them...
Their love blossoms in no time... ❤️
Time seemed to stand still whenever they were together... They would stroll through the park, feed the pigeons, and always end up at a café. Sometimes, he was out of uniform. But when he came to see her in his Marine uniform, it usually meant he had only a few precious moments to spare before rushing back to headquarters.
The goodbyes were never easy... but she understood all too well what they meant. Her father had been a Marine, too.
Until they reached a point where they simply couldn’t be without each other, even when separated by distance... They decided to get married in a quiet, almost secret ceremony, with only two witnesses present (neither of whom appears in the pictures). A Justice of the Peace officiated their wedding.
The moment the words “You may kiss the bride” were spoken, their love was sealed with a kiss— a kiss that would bind them together… forever.
And yes… in some mysterious way, it did.
But… as you already know, their happiness was abruptly cut short…
This is the photo Mitch always carries with him—in his wallet and on his phone. She gave it to him one Valentine’s Day…
And here, you can see the angel pendant with its wings spread wide…
But after that tragic day… Mitch would never be the same again.
He wandered the streets as if lost, drifting aimlessly through the city, consumed by grief and pain… He drank to forget, to silence the memories that haunted him…
He lost all sense of time… and even of where he was. He would wander the streets for hours, barely aware of his surroundings, until sometimes he found himself stumbling into some dark alley, completely drunk and utterly lost.
Until, eventually, he became an FBI agent… He had found a purpose: to track down the person responsible for his wife’s death and make sure justice was served.
But becoming an agent didn’t erase his pain. Even after all those years, the memories still haunt him. When the grief becomes too much, he sometimes turns to alcohol again, trying to numb the pain and forget, if only for a little while…
We all know that FBI agents undergo regular psychological evaluations, along with firearms training and other mandatory assessments…
So, when Mitch is ordered to see the Bureau psychologist, it’s something he absolutely hates.
“My life is nobody’s business.”
But there’s no getting around it. He has to go…
The psychologist is a beautiful woman… but Mitch barely notices.
His mind is elsewhere, locked behind the walls he has built around himself. He’s not there to meet anyone—he’s there because the Bureau requires it, and he intends to get through the evaluation and leave.
Meet the Psychologist... Dr. Barjani.
Here are a few scenes from his psychological evaluations…
The first one is brief. Mitch becomes irritated almost immediately, shuts down, and eventually gets up and walks out.
In the sessions that follow, she begins to dig deeper—slowly and strategically, carefully finding ways to get him to open up and talk.
But Mitch is a tough one. He resists every attempt to break through his defenses, feeling as though his privacy—and everything he has kept buried inside—is being invaded.
In one of their final sessions, she finally reaches the most vulnerable part of him. She gently guides him toward the few truly happy moments he can remember… the day he met his wife, the life they shared, the memories he still treasures.
And then, something inside him breaks.
Tears begin to well up, and before he can stop them, they spill over. He quickly looks away, trying to hide his face and wipe them away before she can see.
He hates this. Hates feeling exposed. Hates anyone seeing this softer, more vulnerable side of him. He’s supposed to be the tough guy—the Marine, the FBI agent who never lets his guard down.
But for once, the tears win.
Buchanan continues to be plagued by recurring nightmares about his wife…
Unable to sleep, he gets out of bed and heads downstairs to his car, parked on the street outside. He slips into the driver’s seat and sits there for a while, trying to clear his head and breathe in the cool night air.
He finally heads back home, crawls into bed, and tries to sleep… but his mind is still racing, his thoughts swirling in every direction.
Then, suddenly—
The doorbell rings!
“What the…?”
Suddenly, a shower of icy-cold water comes crashing down over him.
Mitch yelps and jumps back, completely caught off guard.
Adam bursts out laughing.
“Some Marine you are…”
While Mitch finishes his shower and gets dressed, Adam raids the kitchen, rummaging through the cupboards and refrigerator for anything remotely useful.
A few minutes later, he’s concocted some questionable hangover remedy from whatever scraps he can find.
He takes one look at the murky mixture in the glass.
“Good enough.”
He grins. “If this doesn’t cure him, nothing will.”
And when Mitch finally makes his way into the kitchen, only half-dressed…
When he finally emerges, fully dressed and ready to go… although, for once, he hasn’t bothered to shave...
A few days later, Mitch asks Cindy, the lab technician, for a favor…
This is the moment when she hands him the sheet containing all the information he needs.
At the Gala Cocktail Party...
The Sheppards are among the first to arrive…
When Mitch arrives, he looks around, scanning the crowd for familiar faces.
Then, as soon as he spots Adam and Tiffany, he raises a hand in greeting.
But before he can even reach the Sheppards, Cindy Booker intercepts him…
For a moment, Mitch barely recognizes her. She looks so… so completely different that he has to take a second look.
He finally makes his way over to the Sheppards, and they settle around a table together.
They are happily chatting away, when Hannah comes in...
After dancing to her own rhythm on the dance floor, she finally invites Mitch to join her…
He’s already caught up in the atmosphere, so he decides to indulge the young woman. And, to his own surprise, he actually has fun… doing the best he can to keep up with her.
Mitch lets Hannah head back to her seat while he makes his way toward the bar for a drink…
Before he reaches it, Cindy appears again… and it seems she won't take no for an answer.
Sorry… I couldn’t get the AI to make her slap him! 😁
He’s still reeling from Cindy’s unexpected attitude as he heads back toward the table to rejoin the others…
Just then, Dr. Barjani walks in, champagne glass in hand. She has witnessed the whole exchange as she entered.
As soon as the Sheppards and the others spot her, they wave her over, inviting her to join them at the table…
As they happily greet her…
“Dr. Barjani… come join us!”
She smiles politely and gracefully invites them to call her by her first name instead. After all, they’re not at work.
Mitch wastes no time in asking her out to dance...
After a while...
A little bit of patience while I update all of this story... It will take some time. There's a lot to change. But it will look so much better... and real! 😁
After the explosion... At the hospital... In the ICU...
Mitch in critical condition...
Meanwhile... Adam Sheppard is already out of danger... but also quite in bad shape.
His wife, Tiffany, doesn't leave his side.
When he regains consciousness...
Two days later...
He insists so much that they finally let him go and see his friend... in a wheel chair, of course!... driven by Tiffany...
At the drastic sight...
Suddenly... everything goes haywire! Emergency beeps and other strange alarm sounds...
Doctors and nurses fill the room, and desperately try to stabilize Mitch...
While his friends desperately watch, and pray for him... their hearts pounding...
Even Banita, who has just arrived...
After several attempts to stabilize him...
When he's apparently out of danger, they finally take him to a room...
Banita stays by his side...
During his hospitalization, there she was, constantly by his side...
Even spending sleepless nights... while he was still quite critical...
When he discovered her by his side, sleeping... He felt so grateful for her patience and support.
She made him never feel lonely...
Adam's sense of humour cheered him up a little...
After a long period of hospitalization, long rehab process and lots of therapy still awaited him...
When he finally meets Anura (Banita's daughter)
They decided to meet in the park...
Mitch is sitting on a bench waiting...
(Sorry, no teddy bear here!)
Banita and Anura arrive...
Yes, I know, Anura looks smaller than a seven year old... but...😄That's what I have!
Anura walks toward Mitch with determination...
Mitch is amazed when he sees her...
He feels emotional... with a lump in his throat... he can hardly speak...
Mitch is on cloud nine... in awe... he feels he's dreaming...
Now, the three of them sitting on a bench, together... as a happy family...
Okay... since we all know how this ends... why don't we go to the wedding...
You are all invited!
